Big Game Hunter

The early National Geographic magazines often read like an issue of Field and Stream, with an article by a guy who takes his dog and his rifle out and tells about his day in the field and what kind of luck he had.  Only the NG articles are about elephants or something.

In the August 1912 issue, a Big Game hunter tells about shooting elephants with camera and rifle.  He describes his shot that brought down a large bull, and the pathetic way the cows in the herd gathered around the victim and tried to coax it back to its feet.  The article includes many photos of the prize tusks.

Just 100 years ago, everybody was fine with this.  You just don't realize what you don't realize.
