Olympic Medal Count

The US wins the most overall medals (110 to China's 100), but -- not to slight the silver and bronze winners -- the gold medal count is the one that seems most significant. In that tally, China finished ahead of the US 51- 39.

I haven't seen anyone measure the way we used to score 1-2-3 finishes in dual swim meets where each team entered two swimmers: 5 points for first place, 3 for second, and 1 for third. So if your team wins first, the other team can't get more points in the event even if they win 2nd and 3rd. By that scheme, the US's overall count is depreciated and China out-points the US 346 - 330.

Anyway. The Gold tally goes to China. Second place to the U.S.

And Michael Phelps ties Italy for 9th, just one behind Japan.
